Candidate Frequently Asked Questions
Who can participate in the program?
Applicants must be young women between the ages of 17-22 as of July 15 and must have graduated or will graduate from high school during their reign. Interested young women must live or attend school in the Rockford School District. Women who graduated from Rockford High School are welcome. All candidates must have never been married and have no dependents. This is to coincide with the rules of the Minneapolis Aquatennial.
How much does it cost to be in the program?
There are no fees of any kind for you to enter the program. Ambassadors and Candidates participate in fundraising events to offset the cost of the program. Ambassadors are provided with a budget for attire and transportation.
What are the benefits of being a Candidate?
The program focuses on improving public speaking, interviewing, and gaining poise and confidence. Candidate activities are planned to empower the participants to improve these skills. Most of all, it is a lot of fun and is a great way to earn a scholarship with a unique experience!
How are the Ambassadors chosen?
Ambassadors are chosen during River Days weekend by a judge that is not from the area. Ambassadors are chosen by utilizing a personal interview with the judge, a prepared Meet the Candidate speech and a fishbowl question. This is not a beauty contest, Ambassadors are chosen based on personality, attitude, poise and ability to perform the duties of an Ambassador.
What if I cannot attend a Candidate event?
River Days events are required. If you are participating in other events, we will do our best to work around the other events. Any other events are not required but are encouraged to make the most of the Candidate experience.
What if I want to be a Candidate, but I’m not sure if I want to be an Ambassador?
This is not a problem! Candidacy is designed for you to attend a variety of events. If you feel that you would not enjoy the Ambassador program, you will have time to turn down the opportunity. In private you will be asked if you would accept a position. You can tell them whatever you’d like, including “No, thank you!” No one will ever know unless you decide to share it.
